Your Military Allied Health Training Can Translate Directly To College Credit At Some Universities
Since allied health positions in the military usually include a lot of formal schooling while you are still on active duty, it may also be important to find a college that is willing to offer you credits for those studies. DANTES, the Defense Activity for NonTraditional Education Support, is a tool that you can use to support that search. DANTES will help you send official copies of your JST to academic institutions.
DANTES also offers free access to CLEP, College-Level Examination Program. CLEP lets you take a series of tests in college subject areas which many schools will then accept as credits in those course areas.
What Are Some Of The Non
Some of the non-clinical roles in the military reserve can include:
- Serving as a unit movement officer to ensure all personnel and equipment are transported correctly during a deployment
- Serving as the supply officer in charge of all medical and non-medical equipment, often in excess of several million dollars
- Preparing and scheduling mandated training to be completed by a unit within the year such as scheduling ranges for marksmanship training
- Tracking administrative tasks including annual soldier evaluations, issuing awards, and ensuring soldiers are paid correctly
- Managing the units fitness program designed to prepare soldiers for the Army Combat Fitness test and maintaining or improving body fat percentage
- Commanding a unit with responsibility for all personnel, mandated training, and administrative requirements
PTs and OTs should always be prepared to perform patient care and non-clinical roles to accomplish the mission of the Army and their respective units. Entry-level therapists are typically expected to perform clinical duties although this depends on the needs of the unit as a new PT/OT could instead be immediately sent for training in one of the above tasks. PTs, OTs, and SLPs can also join the reserves as health services administration officers without expectation for clinical care.
How Is The Mentorship
There are plenty of opportunities for mentorship in the military including, advanced training courses annually, first-year sponsorship programs, mandatory online or in-person orthopedic residency , and sports residency at West Point.
There are further opportunities to obtain certifications, including fellowships in tactical sports physical therapy at the US Air Force Academy and orthopedic manual physical therapy , Doctor of Science programs, and PhD programs. The resources are there, you just need to seek them out.

The core mission of a military serviceman is to defend the country. Despite the differences in military positions, each job is essential to accomplishing the primary goal maintaining the U.S. national defense.
Many service members work specifically for the military such as infantrymen and fighter pilots. However, there are also occupations that exist in the civilian workplace. This includes doctors, nurses, and lawyers, among others.

Whats A Typical Day In The Coast Guard Like
Just like the other branches, this depends exclusively on what rate you hold and where youre stationed.
Unlike most of the other branches, however, it was nearly impossible to find out what the typical day in the Coast Guard would be like.
It varies so dramatically that Ive decided to leave it out in this article.
If anyone who has served in the US Coast Guard wants to send me an email with their a brief recap of their day-to-day activities, it would be greatly appreciated!
Should I Join The Navy
It is commonly understood that within the military that the Navy has the best base locations in the US Armed Forces. Although there are minor exceptions, every Navy base is on a coast. So, if you want to serve and the beach life calls to you, consider joining the Navy.
If youre thinking about joining the Navy, one of the biggest decisions you need to make is whether or not youll be OK spending months at a time on a boat.
While most jobs in the Navy will require some time at-sea, this isnt true for every one. Make sure that you know what to expect before signing up if going out to sea is an issue for you.

Refrigeration And Air Conditioning Technician
Another job that isnt necessarily a favorite in the Marines is Refrigeration and A/C Technician.
Again, most join the Marines to get in the fight, not fix a broken refrigerator.
Instead of doing the cool stuff like shooting off mortars or firing a 50 cal. machine gun, youll be squatting underneath an air handler in 95 degree heat.
Keep in mind that while both of these jobs are generally hated in the Marines, it can set you up for a really good career when you get out.
I cant stress how important this is enough!
The Us Military: A Brief Overview
Joining the military includes a lot more than throwing on your military apparel and participating in daily PT. There is a long and storied history behind each branch of our countrys Armed Forces, as well as detailed rules regarding organization and function. Before choosing a branch or even enlisting, it is crucial to understand the structure and tasks of each branch of the U.S. military.
Today, our Armed Forces are organized according to the National Security Act of 1947. This post-WWII legislation gave us the U.S. Air Force and the modern-day Department of Defense, which consists of three military departments: the departments include the Navy, Army and Air Force.
A president-appointed, civilian secretary heads the Department of Defense and each of the three departments within it.
These departments are responsible for the administration of the five different military branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

Whats A Typical Day In The Air Force Like

This is actually one of the hardest branches of the military to describe the day-to-day activities of.
Its heavily contingent upon what job you have, and where youre based.
The jobs are so varied, that there isnt really anything typical.
With that said, generally speaking most jobs in the Air Force follow a very civilian-like regiment.
Since were talking about the Air Force, it would make sense to describe what a typical day might look like for one of the most important jobs: Fighter Pilot.
Heres what it might look like:
0430 0600: Wake up, eat breakfast, get showered and dressed
0600 0830: Mission scheduling and planning. Youll go over the flights for the week, the objectives, airspace boundaries, communications, flight routes, and much more.
0830 1000: Flight briefing. Here youll discuss the intricacies of the flight with the other pilots. Everything from the types of weapons youll be carrying, how they should be dropped, and tactical events will be scrutinized and meticulously gone over.
1000 1030: Head to life support. Here youll suit up for the mission, donning your G-suit, harnesses, equipment, and prepare your helmet.
1030 1100: Head to the Aircraft / perform pre flight.
1100 1130: Engine start, weapons armed, flight check in, and taxi.
1130 1300: Sortie takes place. This will vary widely, and could be anything from dog-fighting, to bombing training targets on the ground.

What Is Your Normal Caseload Like In Terms Of Diagnoses
I see an average of 11-12 patients per day, including 6 new evaluations and 6 follow up appointments. I’d say the diagnoses, in general, are pretty similar to a sports outpatient physical therapy clinic. The average age of patients is around 26-28 years old and they are predominately male.
I’d estimate that 20-30% of our cases are post-operative knee, ankle, and shoulder surgeries 30% low back and neck pain 30% shoulder and lower extremity overuse and training load error related injuries and about 10% complex injuries or non-musculoskeletal conditions that need further investigation.

Why Did You Pick Your Particular School

There were several reasons which lead me to my decision of attending Arcadia University for DPT school. Firstly, I knew I wanted to go to a school that had a strong faculty grounded in both the clinical and research realms of both neurological and orthopedic fields. Arcadia University had this, and I was very intrigued by the research that was being done by professors like Dr. Rebecca Craik and Dr. Philip McClure .
Secondly, Arcadia University had a unique curriculum format which is hard to fully represent, but the basic premise is that each semester was broken into five 3-week units. Each unit consisted of all normally included classes geared around one specific case study with a final exam at the end of each 3-week unit.

Cool Jobs In The Marines
Like the Navy, jobs in the marines are divided up into MOS, or military occupation codes.
Just like with the other branches, your job will completely depend on what your ASVAB score is.
A lot of guys that sign up for the Marines sign up for one job only: Infantryman.
This is the most common job in the Marines, and puts you on the front lines of most foreign conflicts.
With that said, there are plenty of other job opportunities in the Marines.
Some of the more rewarding and marketable ones include:
As I mentioned earlier, most Marine recruits sign up for the infantry.
But its always a good option to keep your eyes peeled for jobs like the ones above, especially if youre considering your options after enlistment.
