Getting Into A Dpt Program

Process To Become Licensed Physical Therapist In USA |FCCPT |FSBPT |NPTE

Most DPT programs require applicants to earn a bachelor’s degree prior to admission. Other programs offer a 3+3 curricular format in which three years of specific preprofessional courses must be taken before the student can advance into a three-year professional DPT program.

A few programs offer freshman entry, recruiting students directly from high school into a guaranteed admissions program. High school students accepted into these programs can automatically advance into the professional phase of the DPT program, pending the completion of specific undergraduate courses and any other stated contingencies, e.g., minimum GPA.

The list of programs at PTCAS includes requirements for each programs.

Choosing The Right Program

APTA does not rank PTA education programs. Programs are accredited by CAPTE, which assures quality in physical therapist assistant education. Among the factors you should keep in mind when choosing your program:

  • Cost and financial aid opportunities. Many PTA students graduate with student loans. Make sure that you are financially aware and prepared. Programs offer different student experiences and have different costs.
  • Demographics and setting. You will be investing a lot into PTA education. Make sure that you select a program where you feel at home.

You may wish to contact current students and recent graduates of the program or interview employers who hire graduates to ask about program strengths and weaknesses.

Send A Passport Style Photo

Along with the rest of the application, you will also be required to send a photo of yourself to PTBC. This should be a 2 by 2 passport-style photo taken within the last 30 days. If you need to get physical fingerprints done, its likely you can find a place that does passport photos as well and kill two birds with one stone. When I did this, the cost was $15 for two copies of the picture. Since they allow you to submit this photo digitally, I have also heard of some therapists creating their own passport-style photo by following the requirements, but personally I wouldnt want to risk a delay due to my homemade photo not being accepted.

    Demand For Physical Therapists

The employment outlook for the physical therapy field as a whole is much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment of physical therapists is projected to grow 22% between 2018 and 2028.

This strong employment outlook is largely due to this predicted shortage, as well as to the baby boomer population aging: Not only are they staying active later in life, but they are also susceptible to chronic and acute health conditions. As a result of this demographic shift, PT job prospects are predicted to be particularly good in settings where older adults are treated, such as acute care hospitals, skilled-nursing facilities and orthopedic care settings.

Prospects may also be especially favorable in rural settings as a result of an existing shortage of physical therapists, many of whom currently choose to live in highly populated suburban and urban locations.

    Physical Therapy Licensure Compact

The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy has been working toward the goal of creating a physical therapy licensure compact that allows PTs and PTAs to practice in any participating state without having to go through the process of obtaining a new license.

This initiative is now a reality, with over 20 participating states!

Each participating state has enacted legislation allowing qualified PTs and PTAs to practice in compact states as long as they maintain licensure in their home state and their home state is also a fellow participant.

Our interactive PT license requirement map will also tell you which states are currently participating in the PTLC. Just click on your desired state to find out if it is a compact participant.

The adoption of the PTLC has made a huge difference for physical therapists practicing in multiple states, just as the Nursing Licensure Compact has done for traveling nurses.

As the American Physical Therapy Association notes: “The combination of increased mobility, changes to the health care system, changes to education , and the rise of telehealth has highlighted the need for clinicians to have the ability to practice across jurisdictional boundaries with minimal barriers.”
