Led Light Therapy For Acne

Production Of Blue Light

Some of the most common skin issues we deal with are acne breakouts or blemishes from prior acne. This makes having access to blue light an important requirement for choosing LED light therapy products. The main benefits of blue LED light are killing acne producing bacteria and controlling sebum production. Knowing if the device produces blue light is important if you want to prevent acne.

Is Led Light Therapy Proven

There is some evidence that LED light therapy can be beneficial in the treatment of wound healing and other skin conditions. LED light therapy was once used by Navy SEALs to aid in wound healing. As a result of the treatment, team members injuries to the joints improved by more than 40%. It was also able to reduce wound healing time.

Blue Light Therapy: The Next Wave In Skincare

Although both red and blue light therapies offer some advantages and disadvantages, blue light therapy has been shown to reduce wrinkles and sun damage. Furthermore, blue light therapy, like other forms of natural healing, has no pain or burns to the skin. If you are experiencing any irritation, you should discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.

Procedure For Led Light Therapy

According to EstheticianEDU, each LED light therapy treatment lasts about 20 minutes. Youll likely need up to 10 treatments total, depending on the results youre looking to achieve.

Some providers have you lie down directly under the lights, while others use LED light-infused wands directly over your skin. The choice often depends on the office, as well as the treatment area.

How Does Light Therapy Work

LED Light Therapy uses colour wavelengths of visible light which have specific skin benefits. As a result of ageing, skin disorders or trauma, healthy skin cells are compromised and unable to renew themselves normally.

‘The skin uses the light as a source of energy to fuel the repair and rejuvenation of damaged cells, or, in the case of treating acne, kill bacteria,’ reveals Tarmey. ‘The energy stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, boosts circulation and accelerates tissue repair. During the treatment, youll simply lie underneath a light screen while the device does all the work.

‘We use LED in every single facial. We start with the cleaning of the skin which includes a Lactic brightening peel and extractions if needed. We then go onto the advanced side of the facial and finish with a full session of LED.

If someone is coming only for LED we clean the skin, then apply LED and SPF to finish.’

Does Red Light Therapy Help With Acne

Blue LED+ Acne Light Therapy

Yes, red light therapy can help with acne. Unlike blue light, red light does not kill C. acnes bacteria. But, it does penetrate deeper into the skin, targeting your sebaceous glands and reducing inflammation . It can help reduce acne breakouts by soothing skin redness, normalizing sebum production, and reducing sebaceous gland size.

In one study, researchers looked at RLTs effects on both non-inflammatory and inflammatory acne. They saw, on average, a 50%+ improvement. They concluded that red light phototherapy alone can be a new therapeutic option for acne vulgaris .

Best of all?

There were no observed side effects.

No dry, flaky, or peeling skin. No nausea, dizziness, or lightheadedness.

Plus, you can use RLT to treat your current acne and prevent future acne breakouts. Thats what makes RLT such an excellent acne treatment.

Inflammatory acne occurs when blemishes or lesions become red, swollen, and warm to the touch. This type of acne is more severe than non-inflammatory acne and includes papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Non-inflammatory acne is more common and includes whiteheads and blackheads .

What About Hyperpigmentation Acne

Hyperpigmentation acne occurs when your skin produces excess melanin, forming a dark spot where a pimple once was. This is most common in people who experience inflammatory acne.

Melanin gives your skin its color. Overproduction of this skin pigment can lead to darker skin.

Its important to note that hyperpigmentation is just a change in skin color and is technically not a scar at all. When a pimple is opened, through popping or other means, your skin enters repair mode and tries to close the wound.

Like with acne scars, your body may not fix the damage correctly. It can overproduce melanin and lead to dark spots. In most cases, if you dont pop your pimples, the hyperpigmentation will usually disappear on its own in a few months.

Fortunately, RLT can help reduce inflammation and enhance cellular repair, so your skin can more effectively recover from breakouts. For best results, try to refrain from popping any pimples.

How Does Blue Light Therapy Treat Acne

Blue light therapy has wavelengths 415545 nm and penetrates approximately 0.3 mm into the skin. Cutibacterium acnes , the main bacterium involved in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris, produces large amounts of intracellularporphyrins, the most abundant of which has a peak absorption at 415 nm. Blue light excites these porphyrins, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species and subsequent bacterial destruction. Blue light also has anti-inflammatory effects through the modulation of cellularinflammatory mediators.

Are Home Light Therapy Devices Effective

Home light therapy devices consist of wearable masks that use low-level light therapy as an LED-based, non-thermal, non-ablative treatment. Currently approved devices on the market use bluered light and are approved for mild to moderate facial acne. These devices are typically smaller than in-office LED devices and thus may require extended treatment sessions for a therapeutic effect. They have been shown to reduce inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesion counts and reduce the size and sebum production of sebaceousglands . A recent trial compared a bluered light therapy mask with and without topical salicylic acid against topical benzoyl peroxide for mild to moderate acne vulgaris. The trial found a 24.4% improvement in inflammatory lesions and 19.5% improvement in non-inflammatory lesions in patients using the light mask, concluding this to be a safe and effective therapy for mild to moderate acne .

Why Is Blue Light Therapy Effective For Acne

Acne forms in the pores of your skin. Each pore has an oil-producing gland. This oil gland keeps your skin healthy however, sometimes oil, dirt, and dead skin cells can become trapped inside your pores and clog them up. Bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes that live on your skin can get inside your pores, as well, making your clogged pores swell and turn into bumps called acne.

Blue light therapy is an effective treatment for acne because it destroys Propionibacterium. Blue light also causes the sebaceous glands to produce less oil, helps condition your skin and decreases other acne symptoms, including inflammation and redness.

Blue light therapy offers many advantages compared to other acne treatments, including:

  • Blue light therapy is safe, gentle, natural, drug-free and painless
  • Blue light therapy devices can be used anywhere on the body
  • Blue light therapy can be combined with other acne treatments
  • Blue light therapy does not cause scarring

Important note: When choosing your blue light therapy device, make sure that its been cleared by the FDA to ensure it is safe for use.

Device Options And Adjustable Settings

Everyone has unique skin types which react to light therapy treatment differently. Therefore, going for a device with the ability to vary the type and intensity of light emitted will provide you with the most value for your investment. Identifying a product that has more optionality will increase the likelihood you find something you need that can benefit you.

Which Kinds Of Light Treat Acne

Doctors used to treat acne with ultraviolet light — the type of radiation that comes from the sun. UV light clears up acne, but it can also damage the skin and cause cancer. Today, doctors donât use UV light to treat acne.

Instead, they use certain wavelengths of blue or red light. Blue and red light therapy kills acne-causing bacteria without damaging the skin.

  • Nodules: Solid pimples that lay deep within the skin, they are large and painful.
  • Cysts: Pus-filled pimples and can cause scarring on the skin.
  • Papules: Small red or even pink bumps that become inflamed.

Blue And Red Light Therapy With Leds Is Safe And Effective For Acne

A 2013 clinical trial evaluated light therapy acne spot treatments done with an at-home LED device. Patients with moderate acne were separated into two groups: a control group that treated their faces with a sham device, and an LED group that treated their faces with blue and red wavelengths for 2.5 minutes every day for a month.

No significant difference in acne was seen in the control group. The light therapy group, however, saw major improvements in their acne. Both inflammatory and noninflammatory acne lesions decreased significantly after LED treatments. Inflammatory acne decreased by 77% with light therapy, while noninflammatory acne decreased by 54% with light therapy.

The researchers also reported that the treatment group saw a reduction in sebum production. They concluded that LED phototherapy was safe and effective for treating not only inflammatory but also noninflammatory acne lesions.

A separate trial published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology concluded that blue and red light combination LED phototherapy is an effective, safe and non-painful treatment for mild to moderately severe acne.

In the trial, peoples acne lesion counts progressively reduced through a four-week LED light therapy treatment period. The final average reduction of peoples acne was 69% after LED treatments with blue and red light. Patients in this trial also reported brightened skin tone and improved skin texture.

Blue Light Therapy For Acne

A number of conditions can be treated with blue light therapy, including:

Inflamed Acne

Blue light therapy has shown real success in treating inflamed acne that is moderate or severe and has not responded to other therapies. Blue light is able to penetrate the skins hair follicles and pores which harbor bacteria that cause inflammation, and therefore cause acne.

Blue light treatment benefits include:

  • Kills acne bacteria
  • Speeds up healing time of inflamed acne
  • Reduces redness

The blue lights natural photodynamic effect works by killing the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes, on the skin. When the bacteria can no longer feed on the oil glands, the redness and inflammation start to dissipate.

While blue light therapy is highly effective, it is best used along with an acne skincare regimen. At Natural Acne Clinic, blue light therapy is used in conjunction with our 3-month Acne Program.

Blue light therapy for acne can even be used to remove scars that were originally caused by acne.

The FDA has approved blue light therapy in-home devices for treatment of acne. However, experts agree that at-home blue light treatments are best for mild to moderate acnenot severe cystic or scarring acne.

These devices are also not effective against blackheads, whiteheads or nodules, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Blue light therapy has been found to reduce the discoloration within 6-12 weekly treatments.

Can You Combine Both Red Light And Blue Light

7 Colors LED Light Therapy LED Skin Rejuvenation Mask Device Lamp Acne ...

Yes, you can combine both red light and blue light in your acne treatment.

While red light therapy alone can help reduce acne, youll get the best results if you combine it with blue light therapy.

Dendy Engelman, a dermatologic surgeon, says, red light is believed to target oil glands to reduce cytokines, which cause inflammation and play a role in chronic acne. In the case of blue light, specific wavelengths stimulate production of oxygen radicals that kill bacteria, all without damaging skin.

In a 2013 clinical study, patients using both red and blue light saw a 77% and a 54% reduction in inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions, respectively. And, unlike with other acne medications, patients experienced zero side effects .

In another study, researchers noted that combination red and blue LED light treatment was marginally better for severe acne than for mild acne .

And, guess what?

Patients who used combination red and blue LED light therapy saw better results than just using blue light or a 5% benzoyl peroxide cream .

Using red and blue light together produces better results than using either light separately. Red light is anti-inflammatory, while blue light is anti-bacterial.

In clinical trial after clinical trial, researchers have found LED light therapy to be an effective way to treat acne, especially in those who dont respond well to acne medications.

In some cases, it was even more effective than some of those dermatologist-prescribed medications!
