How Does Pain Affect Sleeping Positions

Pain And Sleep Welcome

When learning how to sleep with pain, the type of pain may dictate your sleeping position. Those with hip, knee, or shoulder pain as in the case of rheumatoid arthritis may need to avoid sleeping on their side.

Other conditions cause diffuse pain, such as multiple sclerosis. These conditions attack the nerves, which means people may need to switch sleeping positions more frequently to avoid numbness and tingling. These sleepers may need a more responsive mattress that facilitates movement on top of the bed. Reach out to a caregiver or sleeping partner for help if you have trouble adjusting positions on your own.

How Physical Therapy Helps

Dont assume that you have to gulp down painkillers or schedule surgery to fight shoulder pain. Physical therapy can treat many of the conditions responsible for this complaint in a safe, non-invasive manner. Your physical therapist can pinpoint the cause of your pain through a variety of diagnostic techniques. X-rays can reveal signs of arthritis or dislocation. Range-of-motion tests and discussion of your symptoms can tell us exactly which soft tissue may be involved in your pain.

Once we know why your shoulder hurts, we can recommend the correct mix of physical therapy methods to help manage or even completely relieve that pain. Exercises can be very helpful for easing both the pain of osteoarthritis and the stiffness of the frozen shoulder. Bursitis responds well to techniques ranging from heat and ice applications to changes in your workplace ergonomics or athletic training routine. Strengthening exercises can rehabilitate injured muscles and stabilize a shoulder prone to dislocation.

Life is too short to bother with shoulder pain. Contact Prep Performance Center at Lincoln Square, Irving Park, Lakeview, Horner Park, Roscoe Village & Ravenswood Chicago, IL centers today to schedule treatment!

Types Of Massage Therapy Services We Offer

The types of massage mainly depend on each individuals needs. There are massages for injury and pain relief, massages for relaxation, or massages for stress management. Our massage therapists use different massage techniques depending on each clients problem and the goals they want to achieve.

Deep Tissue Massage

This type of massage mainly focuses on reducing pain, such as chronic muscle pain and tension, postural problems, and musculoskeletal disorders. However, it is advised to avoid this type of massage when one has lupus, which could worsen this situation.

Hot Stone Massage

A suitable amount of heated stones are applied to loosen muscle tension and increase ones levels of relaxation. In such therapy, hot stones are placed on ones body. This allows the therapist to go deeper while still using lighter pressure.

Pregnancy Massage

It is not easy to give birth to a child, and this therapeutic massage can help ease those aches and pains. In addition to this, it helps in hormone regulation, improvement of nerve pain, reduced swelling, reduced back and joint pain, and even better sleep during pregnancy.

Myofascial Massage

Myofascial massage may also target trigger points and use stretching to help relieve pain. In this case, a therapist will locate areas that feel stiff and apply manual pressure. This will help improve restricted movement.

Tips And Coping Strategies To Get Sleep When Dealing With Pain

Sleep Center & Sleep Disorder Treatment

Because its more difficult to drift off when dealing with chronic pain, its important to make sleep a priority. People who are permanently sleep-deprived due to their chronic pain may develop an unhealthy relationship with sleep. For instance, they may rely on caffeine or become stressed in the lead-up to bedtime because they know they will have trouble sleeping. Learning how to sleep while in pain starts by retraining your brain with healthy thoughts and behaviors.

Deep breathing, mindfulness techniques, or guided imagery may allow you to reconceptualize the pain in a way thats easier to deal with. One of the principal ways in which pain affects sleep is by keeping the central nervous system aroused. Therefore, in order to be effective, these strategies must help you to relax and not focus on the pain.

Following some basic sleep hygiene strategies can help prepare your body for sleep. Good sleep habits start in the morning, so make sure you get enough sunlight, exercise early in the day, and follow a healthy diet. Avoid stimulants like screens, caffeine, or alcohol too close to bed. Meditation can also help cope with the pain and help with a better quality of sleep.

If you find yourself ruminating or if you are in too much pain to sleep, dont stay in bed. Get up, go to another room, and distract yourself with something else for a while. When you feel sleepy, try going to bed again.

How Our Tmj Specialists Can Help

The TMJ specialists at our TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of Raleigh-Durham are dedicated to evaluating the root cause of your pain. No matter what symptoms youre experiencing or how minor or severe they are, were focused on determining the primary reason behind the craniofacial pain or discomfort.

Given how craniofacial pain can be both complex and unique in that it may manifest differently in different patients, finding the root cause is essential to design the best possible course of treatment. Be it symptoms such as, headaches, tension or cluster or other conditions like musculoskeletal pain, facial neuralgia, our TMJ specialists at North Carolina can identify the primary cause or condition that is causing it, with their substantial expertise and years of experience.

TMJ pains and dysfunctions are often caused by TMJ – a condition that is characterized by disturbances in the action of the jaw – which may be related to a complex problem or more likely a combination of factors. These factors widely range from traumas caused by accidents or injuries to the head or facial area to inadequate oxygen supply and grinding of the teeth.

The Connection Between Sleep Pain And Mental Health

Shoulder Pain and Sleep

People with chronic pain may suffer from a self-perpetuating cycle of pain, insomnia, and depression or anxiety. For example, someone who is in pain may become anxious when they cannot sleep. They may sleep poorly and wake up feeling depressed, which increases their sensitivity to pain. The next night, they are in pain again, so they cannot sleep well, and the cycle continues. Over time, this negative cocktail may worsen existing conditions and even have an influence on a persons level of disability.

One of the more important psychological factors seems to be the tendency to catastrophize. A study on osteoarthritis patients found a link between catastrophizing, poor sleep quality, and a more active central nervous system, suggesting that catastrophizing amplifies felt pain.

Its estimated that one-third of people with chronic pain also meet the requirements for clinical depression. On the whole, it appears that chronic pain patients with depression have higher pain levels, poorer sleep hygiene, and find it harder to switch off their brains at night.

The sensation of pain varies widely from person to person. Psychological factors are among several factors that affect the severity of the pain we feel. This does not mean the pain is not real, but it means that treating pain may require a multifaceted approach that accounts for these various and complex psychological factors.

DR. RYAN ROBINSON

Dr David’s Own Story:

Meet the Team Pain & Sleep Therapy Center

In 2005, my father was diagnosed with extreme sleep apnea. We were able to provide CPAP therapy for him in the hope that it would help to treat his symptoms. Unfortunately, like some sleep apnea sufferers, he could not get comfortable with the machine. As a dentist, I was determined to find a way to help him, and this motivated me to learn as much as I could about clinical approaches to treat his symptoms.

I already understood the connection between TMJ/TMD and sleep apnea from my residency at the Tufts School of Dental Medicine, so I further focused my training by completing several residencies in dental sleep medicine and sleep apnea through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine the American Orthodontics Society TMJ & Sleep Therapy Interantional and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain.

As I learned more about sleep apnea and TMJ/TMD through all of my formal training and courseworkand as I became more involved with experts in the field of sleep apnea and TMJ/TMD I came to the incredible realization that SO MANY of my dental patients share the characteristics of people that may have these conditions. At that moment, I realized that I could greatly improve the quality of my fathers life, as well as the quality of my patients lives.

I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you to our practice as we collectively start your journey to a better, healthier life!

Lauren has been in the dental field for over 15 years and has spent the majority of her career as a Registered Dental Hygienist. As a hygienist she found that building a rapport with children and parents was her biggest strength. She truly enjoyed having an impact on their dental health but wanted to offer a comprehensive total health approach to her patients. Her passion for Health and Wellness led Lauren to further her education in learning the correlation between proper growth and development and the impact it has on total health.

After attending a course in Myofunctional Therapy, Lauren realized this was the missing link that would allow her to take her career to the next level. Utilizing this exercised based therapy, she teaches her patients awareness of proper tongue placement, nasal breathing, and correct chewing and swallowing patterns. This treatment approach allows her to help patients reach their full genetic potential and prevent a lifetime of problems that would otherwise not have been addressed in our current medical model of healthcare.

Lauren is also Butekyo Breathing certified which emphasizes nasal breathing, breathing awareness, relaxation, and diaphragmatic breathing. This therapy coupled with myofunctional therapy is what makes Lauren unique and allows her to treat everyone, from the smallest of patients all the way throughout life.

What Is Shoulder Pain

Your shoulder is capable of amazing feats however, with amazing feats also sometimes comes amazing discomfort. Your shoulder joint is called a ball-and-socket joint because the head of the humerus naturally fits into a corresponding space within the scapula A layer of cartilage keeps the bone ends from rubbing together, and sacs called bursae to keep nearby tendons from rubbing painfully against the bones. The tendons attach the bones to a set of muscles called the rotator cuff. When something goes wrong with the intricate mechanical interplay among these structures, pain is sure to result.

Shoulder pain can vary, depending on its cause. In some forms of tendon impingement, for instance, you feel pain as you raise your arm up, only to stop feeling the pain before the arm stretches completely skyward. A degenerated shoulder joint may ache annoyingly every time you move it in any direction. An acute injury can cause sharp, intense pain that makes it impossible for you to move your shoulder at all.
